“Friends” group, which says casino would block views, has edge

The rezoning of land in New York City for skyscrapers and a casino puts the experience of the city's High Line "under threat" according to the founders of Friends of the High Line.

Fashion mogul Diane von Furstenberg has added her voice to a chorus of New Yorkers opposed to a proposal to build multiple high rises, including a casino, on Manhattan’s Far West Side.

Alan van Capelle, the executive director of Friends of the High Line, is fronting a new PR blitz to halt Related’s $12 billion bid to land a casino license in Hudson Yards. The campaign is picking up support from local politicians such as Assembly Members Tony Simone and Deborah Glick.

Assemblyperson Simone: The community is against it, I’m a no.

“I’ve been clear: I’m philosophically opposed to a casino on the west side of Manhattan. The community has been against it, and unless that changes, I’m a no,” said Assemblyman Tony Simone.

Members of the new Protect the High Line public awareness campaign want to stop plans for a major, $12 billion development that would include three sky-reaching towers and a full-service Vegas-style casino. A project of this size, the advocacy group said, would “negatively impact” the visitor experience at the iconic, elevated West Side park.
